Jesus, Tamales, and True Love…unedited…

This isn’t a story about Jesus eating tamales and passing out true love. It is a story about a man who gave up on love long ago, and who has found his soul mate. Hello everyone, I apologize for being out of the loop for so long. As I have written previously, love is no friend of mine. Well, I can now say what was I thinking?

So, when I least expected it, and in all honesty and forthcoming, she didn’t either, we found each other. It started like this: “Hi! I’m making a pot of beans Friday night. You wanna come have some?”

To my chagrin, she looked me dead in the eyes and replied, “We’ll see. I’ll let you know.”

My heart sank. I’ve been turned down before, but this level of non-commitment surprised me. I walked away resigned to the fact that I’d only see her in church services, but never at my house. Monday came and went, and I heard nothing from her. She’s not coming. Ah well, it’s for the best I reckon. Late Tuesday afternoon my phone dinged, and I scooped it up and stared at the screen.

“Who else is coming over for beans?”

I stared at the screen and tried to think of who else I could ask over. My buddy Luis and I were fond of tamales, and we always have a good time together, so I asked him and his wife over as well. They accepted, and I waited with bated breath for Friday evening.

On Friday evening I whipped up chili instead of beans, and I stood on the porch and watched as Luis drove down my driveway. When she stepped out of the vehicle, my heart raced. She was beautiful, and I invited them in. Things went well, but at the end of the night, I was left wondering if we would have anything to talk about on a solo date.

There’s only one way to know for sure.

I chanced it, and man, am I ever so glad I did. The following Wednesday I invited her to Mr. Ribs, and we sat down at a booth. We ordered, and the conversation just flowed between us. Between bouts of food, including the nasty fish I ordered, we discovered we had tons in common.

It’s been over a month, and we’re still talking. Things have escalated, and the future looks bright. For once, I don’t see things ending in a fiery crash. I’m no longer the angry, grinch-like creature who hated love. My perspective has shifted, and once again, I can’t wait to see what happens next.

I’ll catch up with you later.
