Howdy! It’s 1500, and I’m just sitting down to write. Mom and I got out in my yard this morning and went to work on removing the stump of a mature Azalea bush from one of the front flowerbeds. It’s not as easy as it seems, especially when you’re using picks, shovels, an axe or two, and a sledgehammer. Now, you might think that there’s no reason to use a sledgehammer on a plant. You would be wrong.
These are no small plants, and the root systems on these monstrosities are…it’s a hot mess y’all. We started at about 0800, and it took us a couple of hours of challenging work to get the ball root to even move. After much grunting and groaning, not to mention begging and pleading, we finally got it out of the ground.
I was whooped by then, and my day hadn’t even started. We took a water break, and then went onto something else. It’s been a good day, and we accomplished many things I’d wanted to get done. My wife is happy too. So, all’s well that ends well.
All this labor is satisfying, especially when I look around and see small improvements in our home and landscape. Writing is no different. There are days when I sit at the computer and shake my head in disgust. However, with some persistence and several hours into a rewrite, you can see the improvements.
I suppose the key is to keep working, or to maintain an attitude of improvement. Each victory, regardless of how small, is a positive step in the right direction. You must start the race prior to ever crossing the finish line.
So, keep going. The race isn’t over, and you’ve got this. Y’all have a momentous day, and I’ll catch you next time.
